Are Great Harvest Bread Company products available from grocery stores?

Sorry, Great Harvest breads and sweets are not available in grocery stores.

We have many competitors who try to imitate our products, but unless it's bought from one of our bakeries or local farmers market's, it's not a Great Harvest Bread Company product. Some literally copy the ideas and names of our breads.

Great Harvest Bread has been baking whole wheat breads from scratch with quality ingredients since the late 1970s. Our business model is to offer the freshest, healthiest, and most tasteful breads as possible.

Breads typically offered in grocery stores contain preservatives to make them softer and appear fresh. The reality is that they're not able to keep as fresh naturally because of the time it takes to transport and stock them on the grocery shelves.

Products from Great Harvest, Lansing, are baked fresh every morning and made available to our customers fresh out of the oven. It's not uncommon for our customers to take home a steaming hot, fresh loaf of bread. We often hear are customers say, "Once you've had your bread, you can't go back to grocery store bread!"

Can you tell me a little bit about the processes that make your products so fresh and healthy?

One of the more important ways we produce fresh and healthy products is by using stone ground flour.

As our flour mill spins at high RPMs, the wheat kernels move out through the grooves of the stone and are grounded up into fresh whole wheat flour. We grind our fresh flour this way every morning, creating a better tasting and more nutritious loaf of bread. This is because the flour is fresh and keeps all of the natural nutrients.

Oxidation will affect flour that is allowed to sit for extended periods of time, causing essential nutrients to dissipate from it.

This is the reason that cereals and other flours are often "enriched" with a process where nutrients are artificially put back into the flour.

At Great Harvest Bread, we mill our flour every day and bake bread with it within 24 hours. As it is with any baked good, by using the freshest ingredients, you'll get the most natural, healthy, and best tasting product possible. At Great Harvest Bread, Lansing, this is why we always use fresh ground whole wheat flour for our bread.

What's the best way to store the bread I get from Great Harvest?

The best way to store our bread is to wrap it in a plastic bag, when cool enough. Try to keep it in a cool, dry climate, out of the sun.

Because our breads are made without preservatives or dough conditioners, you can expect them to keep fresh for 7-10 days.

Bad places to store bread:
On top of the refrigerator (the heat from the appliance is too warm)
On your counter, under a window (the sun will make the bread steam up inside and accelerate mold)
Inside of your refrigerator (the refrigerator temperature will cause the honey to crystallize and the airflow can dry out the bread)

Good places to store your bread:
In a pantry out of direct sunlight
In a bread box or under the cabinet on your counter
Out of direct sunlight

Great Harvest breads can be frozen

It's best to wait 24 hours after it has been out of the oven before you freeze the bread. This allows flavors to mature and better texture to the bread after thawing out again.

We recommend double bagging so that odors and tastes from other frozen goods do not taint the flavor of your bread.
